WHY ELOPE AT THE CLAIBORNE HOUSE B&B?
Not everyone wishes to spend $25,000 or more on a wedding. There are those who would rather use that money toward a honeymoon, house payment, or even the birth of a new child! Then there are those who want simplicity versus stress. They wish to savor every moment of their marriage ceremony instead of compounding headaches over the planning of a big event wedding for everyone else.
At The Claiborne House Elope Virginia, we will do all the planning and have you show up relaxed, in love and ready to tie the knot! We keep the cost low at $749+tax (Elope November through March and the rate is NOW $599+TAX! These elopements will be held either on the porch or in the parlor inside.) to help make your dreams come true. This is a very special day and it is all about you!
WHY DO YOU ONLY OFFER ONSITE CEREMONIES?
We think onsite is magnificent; we have lovely gardens, trees, water features. We have chosen a special place in our gardens near the ponds as the ideal beautiful location at The Claiborne House B&B to keep it simple and elegant. This also helps to keep the cost down.
WHAT SORT OF PHOTOS DO YOU PROVIDE WITH THE ELOPEMENT PACKAGE?
The photos in the Elopement package will be of the happy bride and groom, the ceremony, and the toast and cake service. We will take some lovely photos for you to cherish from your special day.
If the couple wishes to have more photos taken, there is a fee of just $150 for an hour of professional photography. This will be after the wedding, so the couple will be glowing and super photogenic. We highly recommend this option! (Available for outdoor garden elopements, not November to March indoor elopements).
We will take your fabulous photos on a Nikon digital SLR that will be uploaded to a CD so you can print and share your big day with your family and friends. You can edit and print the ones you choose any size and as many as you want when you want, as you will own all the photos. We highly recommend the extra hour of photos to remember your special day! All the photos on this page and the Elopement page were taken here.
We cannot discount the Elope Virginia Package if you want to bring your own photographer, but by all means, if this is what you wish to do, there is no objection. We cannot use other cameras or camera phones during the ceremony. The Elopement package is limited to 4 people (we are not included in that number) so if one is an additional photographer then that is fine. (Any additional onlookers will be charged $25 fee per person as we are trying to keep this an elopement, not a small wedding.)
CAN WE INVITE FAMILY AND FRIENDS?
We have limited the number of people in the Elopement Package to 4, which includes the Bride and Groom. So this allows room for two witnesses, or children of the couple if you wish. Witnesses are not required.
This is not a small wedding, but an elopement, so we try to make it as uncomplicated as possible. The cake, the sparkling beverage for the toast are only suitable for up to 4 people. Please ask your guests to NOT arrive more than 15 minutes early prior to the wedding time. We do not have a public restroom available; guests of the wedding party will have to use the restroom in your reserved room. If more than 4 people are in attendance (including the bride and groom) there will be a charge of $25 extra per person. We want to keep it intimate!
WHAT IF FRIENDS WANT TO JOIN US AFTERWARD?
The Claiborne House is a bed and breakfast which has other registered guests on the premises. When you purchase the Elope Virginia Package you are not renting the entire bed and breakfast. If you wish you use the entire bed and breakfast common areas then you are able to rent all the rooms (6) for this purpose. There are no public restrooms, only guest room bathrooms. For this reason, again, we limit the Elopement Package to 4 guests.
CAN OUR DOG JOIN US?
We think pets at the ceremony are a lot of fun, especially in the photo session with the bride and groom afterward! We do not, however, allow pets in the guest rooms at the B&B. So they would have to return home after the ceremony or go to the grandparents’ house.
CAN WE STAY IN ANOTHER ROOM BESIDES THE LOVE SHACK OR SIERRA SUITE?
Yes, this is your option. The Love Shack (aka The Wash House Cottage) and The Sierra Suite are our most expensive rooms, and the only rooms where we deliver breakfast. Other rooms will enjoy breakfast in the dining room. If you choose a different room, either by choice or availability, then breakfast would be served in the dining room. You can choose any room you wish!
Your room is reserved for the Honeymooners only, no outside guests may stay overnight in your room. If you have family or friends who wish to spend the night, they may reserve another available room at the regular room rate. Click here to see all rooms at The Claiborne House.
WHAT DENOMINATION IS THE MINISTER?
The Officiant/Celebrant reserved for The Claiborne House is registered through Virginia Baptist Church, which means he is authorized to legally officiate your wedding in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We do not provide an overtly religious based ceremony. We are happy to share the text of the ceremony with you in advance for your perusal. Couples of all faiths and backgrounds are respected here at The Claiborne House and in the Elopement ceremony. In addition to the wedding vows the Officiant will ask you to repeat, if you wish to share your own personal vows, there will be an opportunity to do so during your ceremony.
Due to the Officiant’s religious affiliation he is unable to conduct same-sex marriages. If you wish to hire your own officiant, please let us know in advance. The Elope Virginia Package rate remains the same, however.
The innkeepers at would like to share their experience of a long-lasting happy marriage with you. The recipe for a loving marriage is not in the preacher or the church building, it is not in the amount of money spent on the wedding and receptions, it is born in the couple themselves.
If you wish to bring your own Celebrant or Officiant for any other reason, just let us know in advance. There is no price reduction.
DO WE NEED A BLOOD TEST OR COUNSELLING BEFORE THE ELOPEMENT?
In the Commonwealth of Virginia there is no requirement for a blood test, or pre-marital counselling. You can obtain a marriage license at any Virginia Courthouse. We have the Franklin County Courthouse (Circuit Court) just a couple blocks away where you can go and get your marriage license. It is open Mon-Fri 9AM to 4PM. It is valid for 90 days, so you can pick it up in advance at any time within those 90 days. Here is the phone number: (540) 483-3065. Address is: 275 South Main Street, Suite 212, Rocky Mount, VA 24151.
If you require a Saturday to obtain your marriage certificate, we recommend Floyd County Courthouse which is open 830am to Noon on Saturdays (excluding holiday weekends). 100 E Main St # 200 Floyd, VA 24091 (540) 745-9330
You must bring this marriage certificate with you to The Claiborne House so the Officiant can fill it out after you are married.
WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING? HOW SHOULD WE DRESS?
What you wear is entirely up to you, if you wish to wear gown and tuxedo, or stylish evening gown and suit, feel free to do so. You can dress however you want to, the ceremony keeps simplicity in mind, but the bride and groom can go all out, or stay a little bit country. If you have any props you wish to use for the photos (especially the additional add on photo session) please have those handy. Hats, musical instruments, whatever you fancy. Your wedding, your style!
Arrive at The Claiborne House with everything you need and ready to be married that day! The time chosen for your Elopement is just for you, and we will begin promptly. No delay, no time to melt in the heat.
We do not offer extra space for dressing and preparing for the ceremony, your guest room is available for you to use at check in time (4pm). If you have any guests with you, they will need to use your guest room to prepare as well. The ceremony time will be at 6:00PM-7:00PM.
WHEN DOES IT HAPPEN AND HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

From November through April they are weekends, but at an earlier time frame when the light lasts, or after dark if you prefer. The cake table will be set up elegantly on the porch with white tablecloth and wedding gallantry!
After that you can jump for joy, or run around the inn with big cheeky smiles!
