You‘ve got to be some kind of serious cinematic curmudgeon to not be swayed by “Lincoln.” Stephen Spielberg has always had his detractors among serious film critics — nobody can be that popular and good, right? And, historians can always probably find a nit or two to pick with the movie. Then, there‘s the folks who still blame ol‘ Honest Abe for that whole “The War of Northern Aggression” thing.

Haters aside, “Lincoln,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis, is filmmaking of the highest order. It‘s the kind of movie that should be shown in schools. Not for mythologizing a historic figure, but for the opposite — humanizing him, and for depicting the unwieldy sausage-making of legislating against an entrenched opposition that is the heart of American democracy.

The state of Virginia is gamely celebrating the larger-than-life man, and the movie, which was shot entirely within the state. It contains many of the war‘s most important battlefields, already a well-trod path for tourists. “Lincoln” was shot mostly in and around the state capitol (and erstwhile capitol of the Confederacy) Richmond, and key battleground Petersburg. (There are discounts for many of these attractions if the “Travel the Path of ‘Lincoln‘ ” offer is mentioned.)

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie “Lincoln” and learned quite a bit from it. I hope you will see this movie and visit Virginia. The “Bad Boy of the Confederacy” named so by General Robert E Lee, was from our Rocky Mount Virginia, General Jubal Anderson Early. General Jubal Early was involved in more battles than anyone else in the Civil War. His law office is just a couple blocks from The Claiborne House Bed and Breakfast, the owner of the property is allowing private tours if you are interested.

We also recently visited the birthplace of General Robert E Lee which is on the Northern Neck of Virginia. This state is so full of history, you can’t ignore it!

This is a great time of year to people watch (if you aren’t one of the overstressed people in the overpacked grocery store.)

I was there pushing my cart (californian vernacular), trolley (australian vernacular) buggy (southern vernacular) and had to try to “git around” an old guy on a cell phone. We shall call him Grandpa. Well Gramps was standing in front of the freezer section with all the frozen toppings, simply bewildered. He had a cell phone glued to his ear to hear Granny explain to him again which “whipped cream” she wanted for the punkin’ and sweet potato pies. He was confused, none of them say whipped cream, they all say topping, light, creamy, cool whip…

It wasn’t long before he dialed home to get directions from the chief. I know, as I was waiting to get to the eggs and had to wait while he got his instructions and the situation under control. Bless his heart.

Inside our Feliz Navidad Chorizo Quiche is:

crumbled Mexican chorizo (cooked and crumbled in fry pan) you can substitute vegan chorizo if you don’t eat pork

sautéed RED bell pepper

sautéed fresh GREEN jalapeno pepper pieces

fiesta cheese blend

2-3 tsp of sweet corn

eggs (about 7 or 8)

Texas Pete hot sauce – a few dashes

Salt and pepper – a few grinds

Tbsp of three cheese ranch to thicken and bind together

homemade pie crust (or storebought if you like)

Baked at 385 degrees Fahrenheit for about 45 minutes.

You can’t see how pretty it is inside, just out. I didn’t mix the Chorizo in with the eggs, so the quiche will be colorful and show the Chorizo crumpled inside, not blended into it (as is traditional with Chorizo and eggs where I am from).

I put the peppers on top so it will be cut evenly into 8 slices, and served with a small cup of salsa. Jalapenos lose their heat, but retain their flavor if you saute them, they intensify their heat if you roast them over a flame.

Did you know that the Hermit Crab begins its life as small as a dot . (pencil dot) and is thrown about by the sea mist in the waves?

As the hermit crab grows in size, it has to find a larger shell and abandon the previous one. This habit of living in a second hand shell gives rise to the popular name “hermit crab”, by analogy to a hermit who lives alone. Several hermit crab species, both terrestrial and marine, use “vacancy chains” to find new shells: when a new, bigger shell becomes available, hermit crabs gather around it and form a kind of queue from largest to smallest. When the largest crab moves into the new shell, the second biggest crab moves into the newly vacated shell, thereby making its previous shell available to the third crab, and so on.

A few species do not use a “mobile home” and inhabit immobile structures left by polychaete worms, vermetid gastropods, corals and sponges.

Hermit crabs are often seen as a “throwaway pet” that would live only a few months, but species such as Coenobita clypeatus have a 25+ year lifespan if properly treated, and some have lived longer than 32 years. (It really bothers me to see them for sale at chotchke shops along congested beach resort towns. My mother told me when she was in school the popular item at the fair was a chameleon on a rope. ugh)

One of the greatest children’s books of all time is PAGOO by Holling Clancy Holling. A fascinating illustrated story of life in the tide pool via following this Hermit Crab (Little Pagurus).

As a family some of our favorite times are spent exploring tide pools. My daughters and husband are THRILLED to be woken up at sunrise to explore (not!) But once they are there they are happy Mom woke them so they wouldn’t miss the adventure!

Last year, the last morning of a few days away to Tybee Island, Georgia I got everyone up, grabbed some coffee and we went at low tide to explore. (See above photos).

Just sharing a little bit about what makes us tick as innkeepers here at The Claiborne House B&B.
sHORT bIO:

Short Version

Dead right, honest songwriting delivered in a hauntingly beautiful yet gritty, neo-traditional Americana wrapper. Doug and Telisha write songs about a place where old time religion, superstition, run down bars, gravel parking lots and boarded up factories all mingle together. On stage they have a stunning charisma that can transform a raucous bar into a quiet listening room, with even the most jaded hipsters waiting for the next line before ordering another PBR, then launch right into a blistering rocker that will have everyone clapping and singing along. Quick wit and fearless delivery make every show original and personal.
